Default Combat Arms Season 2 Wrap-Up

WOGL Combat Arms Season 2 Wrap-Up
Author: Justin - Media Director
Editor: Sandy - Director of Operations

When we look back on Season 2, we're in for a shock when we realize how triumphant the Season was, along with all of the unexpected twists and upsets from the teams who participated. However, aside from straight game play we had more than our fair share of events that made Season 2 the season to play in. With the rise of WOGLTV, the huge development leaps from Scrimspot, and of course the huge surge of teams who took part in Season 2 in comparison to Season 1, Season 2 proved to be a major milestone for WOGL.

The following content of this article will seek to publicize the crazy narrative that is Season 2, and bring said information to the public in a manner that will try to inform us of how truly epic Season 2 was for the teams, the Combat Arms community, and the staff here at WOGL. We're going to dwell into the Divisionals and Playoffs and bring you the players and team that showed us how to perform in the spotlight, as well as the memorable moments from the MOTW broadcasts. Stay comfortable, as you're about to enjoy the ride!

SnD Divisional Recap

Four divisions, 36 teams, 120+ matches played, and over 300+ individual participants all in just 13 short weeks. If that doesn't scream a heavy competition field, then what does? Season 2 Divisionals for Combat Arms certainly took us all by surprise in the vast amount of teams that registered and had the goal for first place. Accommodating these teams into nine short weeks was certainly a task our staff was uneasy about, but going through Season 2 , WOGL is now ready for anything any game could throw at us. Let's not forget the community that stood by and watched as the Season progressed, through the upsets and MOTW's, cheering the teams on and giving the teams motivation and support for Playoffs.

Taking a quick look through the top teams in each division and the player that basked in the spotlight in the Divisionals will prove to be a satisfying experience with the likes of VerTu, Core Gamers, ParoXysmE, Red Dragon, Abstract, Omniscient, ZS Clan and many more community favorites!

Alpha Division
One take at the Alpha division and we realize how tough Omniscient had it to make it into Playoffs. We had VerTu claiming a perfect Divisional Season, going seven wins and zero losses. Meanwhile we had Omniscient sticking it out and proving what a top contender they are by only losing two matches, and winning 5 altogether. Omniscient only losing to VerTu and ParoXysmE (by a slight win), further proves how hard Omniscient tried and succeeded into making it into Playoffs. ParoXysmE lost to VerTu and Tactical Gaming surprisingly. However such a settling defeat from TG did not stop them from placing in the Playoffs.

The MVP team of the Alpha Division just has to go to VerTu. Not because of their divisional placing, but because of how each team they faced, VerTu made it look easy. 10-0'ing more teams than any other, and having the best net as a team in the league, it's just focused on VerTu as the MVP. Congrats VerTu!

Bravo Division
Powerhouse division Bravo had top and well established teams ProCore and Eureka7 (S1 Champions) heading out against ZS Clan, the second best wild card team we saw in Season 2. We had Eureka7 taking the division, losing only one match to ProCore on Snow Valley. While ProCore lost two games to ZS Clan and Silenced. ZS Clan was busy going through every team left in the Division. When it came to Eureka7 and ZS Clan in the MOTW, a technicality gave ZS Clan the loss. This is why you run your anti-cheat players!

The MVP team for the Bravo Division is a tough one to choose. You have Eureka7 going seven and one, while ZS Clan and ProCore both lose two matches. However, taking a look at Eureka7's consistency in the Bravo division, we have to give it to them. Congrats Eureka7!

Charlie Division
Exceedingly close teams in terms of victories and defeats, Charlie Division kept us all on our feet as to who was going to come out the victor and who was going to make the Playoffs. First we have Outcasts and InFluence heading it out against each other going 7-1 respectively. Then Bug Eyed Bastards with a come from behind season finishing a respectable 6-2 after struggling early. Outcasts lost to Tactical Gaming due to an anti-cheat technicality, but provided Influence a loss to tie themselves with InFluence in the division. B.E.B drew the wrong end of the stick by losing to both InFluence and Outcasts.

MVP team for the Charlie Division is a tough choice for anyone to pick. You have two teams battling it out so hard that they tie for the Division, while B.E.B performs consistently. However in the end it just has to go to Outcasts for their stunning performance all Season long and dominating all of the opponents they were faced with. Congrats Outcasts!

Delta Division
What can be said about the Delta Division? Strong and popular teams Abstract and Core Gamers heading up against newcomer and underdog Red Dragon. Fourth place S1 finisher Abstract found out about the tough times Core Gamers had in store for them, while the community was flabberghasted by the overwhelming upsets put on by Red Dragon. RD going 7-0, which was definitely a statement to all other divisional champions, defeated each team they came across by definitive margins in score. Abstract and Core Gamers both experienced inconsistency and roster issues, however they did just enough to earn a playoff spot

It's a tough choice to determine the MVP team for the Delta Division when each team placed in the Top 8 in Playoffs. However Red Dragon proved the Divisionals were no fluke when they replayed Abstract and Core Gamers in the Playoffs and flawlessly walked away with the victories. Red Dragon came out of the woodworks and proved they aren't to be taken lightly. For this they are the MVP of the Delta Division. Congrats Red Dragon!

SnD Individual Player Highlights
Nine weeks and nine POTW awards awarded for Season 2. These include players Fyter, SHAMANROY, Randymoss514, Trick_, One Dragon, _Futers_ and DiamondRob. Each of these players performed above average in all of the games they played, and they all deserve the recognition from the community for their efforts and their skill that they have obtained through the WOGL competitive field! Each player had their own individual moments on the MOTW broadcasts and evident in their match report screens. The fun part of this all is looking at the players and they most memorable moment. So here's the five players that deserve our time for their impressive display of skill and teamwork in WOGL.

5. Randymoss514
Randymoss514 isn't only a highly skilled individual at FPS's, but he also knows how to lead his team to victory. Randymoss514 coming from ParoXysmE, represented his team and himself against the toughest opponent, VerTu, and in a MOTW broadcast. Randymoss514 lead his team to beat VerTu on Snow Valley (only to be taken away due to a technicality), as shown by the largely evident teamwork and strategies pulled off by ParoXysmE on offense in the MOTW.

4. Trick_
Trick_ is Trick_. Providing the game changing effort to VerTu, Trick_ certainly proved he was a WOGL contender through-out all of the matches he played in. As soon as Trick_ made his debut to VerTu, we knew we were going to see a spectacular player bring an interesting but exciting level of play from VerTu. Excellent job through-out the Season Trick_!

3. One Dragon
One Dragon from B.E.B is one of the most solid and consistent players we have in the league and are lucky enough to have seen compete. Clutching against the odds, One Dragon constantly surprised us through-out the Season and from community reactions, he quickly grew his reputation. Good job for your hard work One Dragon!

2. SHAMANROY
There's not much to say about SHAMANROY that we already don't know about. He's always top fragging, and is always bring his team to a win with superb teamwork and individual talent. Time and time again SHAMANROY was there to pick up on the slack from his team and produce a win. Certainly the one person I would not want to meet in a match. Superb job this Season SHAMANROY!

1. Fyter
The #1 player in Season 2 SnD has to go to Fyter. Persistent in his FPS skill and being a crucial member to VerTu through-out the entire Season, he certainly earned it. Overall Fyter has accumulated over 14 awards, winning POTW in both SnD and CTF several times, #1 draft pick, last season's CTF MVP, and many more. It's pretty wild to see such a player possess incredible skill in the CA competitive community. Congrats Fyter, you have the leagues MVP for Season 2 SnD!

Reading over these list of personal achievements from each player, it's obvious that these competitors had more than just winning WOGL on their minds. These players prove time and time again that they are the contenders you do not want to go 1 on 1 with!

Season 2 Playoffs
After the long and hard nine weeks of the Divisionals were over, we had the 12 teams that had performed strongly and exceptionally well make their way to Playoffs. These teams beat out tough competition and held it together long enough to finally say they are WOGL - P material: (in order of seed):

VerTu, Red Dragon, Outcasts, Eureka7, InFluence, Core Gamers, Omniscient, ProCore, B.E.B, Abstract, ParoXysmE and ZS-Clan.

These teams deserve a huge pat on the back for their hard work and dedication that they brought to Season 2.

Round 1 of Playoffs
In Round 1 of Playoffs we had several interesting matches to view and a ton to speculate about. It was all very exciting and the community was just bathing in enjoyment.

The first match of Round 1 was between B.E.B and ProCore. Both of these teams are seasoned WOGL teams and the community was just split in half over who would come out on top. B.E.B took hold of their consistency and hard working attitude and brought it into the match against ProCore's variety of strategies and tactics. In an excellent match between the two, the victor was B.E.B who showed they wouldn't back down and were willing to go to Round 2 with a 10 - 3 win.

The second match up that developed to be interesting was between ZS Clan and InFluence. The community heavily favoured ZS Clan, but there were some doubts about ZS Clan's ability to perform under the spotlight. The naysayers were proven wrong and ZS Clan took the win 10 - 3.

Third match was between Core Gamers and ParoXysmE. Both teams had awed the community with their strategies, tactics and individual skills. However when the time came to play in Playoffs, cG brought their A game and swept ParoXysmE by a 10 - 3 win.

The final match in the first round was Abstract facing Omniscient live on WOGL.tv. The community was rooting extensively for Omniscient as they had put a lot of work into this upcoming match, but they weren't the only ones putting in the effort. Abstract came out with new strats and overtook Omniscient 10 - 5.

Playoffs - Quarter-Finals
The Quarter-Finals brought in the best of three maps format for a much more accurate and competitive challenge to the teams. Four matches to be played and eight teams remaining, the amount of concentrated skill was just too much to bare for some teams.

In the first match of Round 2, we had VerTu and B.E.B going at it. VerTu the S1 second place finishers were looking for that first place finish in Season 2. B.E.B on the other hand had the odds stacked against them, yet they still put the an impressive performance in. Alas the community favorite, VerTu edged it out the victory 25-17.

The second match pitted Eureka7 and ZS-Clan against each other for a re-match of their earlier match that ended in controversy ZS Clan had won the previous game, but due to a technicality had to forfeit the game. Eureka7 looking forward to repairing their egos and ZS Clan looking to prove they could win again just spelled excitement for the MOTW. Surprisingly enough Eureka7 showed us why they won Season 1 and came out on top with a 26 - 9 win.

Next up we had Core Gamers going against Outcasts. Core Gamers struggling with roster and commitment issues took the opportunity to regain their focus and prove to everyone that they were still in it to win. Outcasts tried valiantly but cG snuck past them 23 - 22.

Lastly we had Abstract and Red Dragon going at it. Red Dragon had shocked the community with their excellent performance in the Divisionals, already beating Abstract and cG with ease, thus the community wasn't sure if Red Dragon was going to persist or if Abstract could be a block to the dominance Red Dragon had been showing. Unfortunately for Abstract, Red Dragon kept the momentum rolling and won 20 - 10.

Playoffs - Semi-Finals
Before we knew it we were at the Semi-Finals for Season 2. Four teams remained and only two matches needed to be completed before the Finals. VerTu, Red Dragon, Core Gamers and Eureka7 were the top four teams the community all had their eyes focused on. Explosive content ensued soon after.

VerTu vs Eureka7. What more can be said about this match up? The second place and first place finishers of Season 1 going head to head for the Semi-Finals. Could Eureka7 repeat, or would VerTu add more prominence to their already highly regarded reputation? The community was up in the air the entire time right up until the broadcast.

Eureka7 looked as if they had a chance, but quickly and swiftly VerTu whispered "no". VerTu efficiently swept over Eueka7 to win 2 - 0, putting Eureka7 out of the Playoffs and battling for a third/fourth placing. VerTu showed how much they were determined to win WOGL Season 2 in this match.

Next we had Red Dragon and Core Gamers. Core Gamers who had been a community favourite from Day 1 of Season 2 was looking extremely strong considering their roster conflicts, while Red Dragon continued to show confidence in their play style. Red Dragon was the uprising star of Season 2, and had proven they were not just a pubstar team in CA.

Red Dragon came out strong on Snow Valley, but had some resistance from Core Gamers. Eventually however Core Gamers couldn't keep up with Red Dragon and ultimately lost Snow Valley 10 - 4. The next map was a sweep by Red Dragon 10 - 1. Red Dragon made sealed their date with VerTu and showed the community that they capable of taking all comers.

Vertu vs Red Dragon
The perennial powerhouse vs the Cinderella story

Twelve long and hard weeks had gone by for Season 2. Dozens of teams, hundreds of matches and vast amounts of players had experienced the highs and lows of winning and losing. The two teams that were hungry for more weren't going to go down easily, or so it seemed.

Neither Vertu nor Red Dragon had dropped a game all season on long. As if no one was on their level of competitive play, they were in their own league. VerTu and Red Dragon had come so far for one thing, and that was to prove they could win WOGL Season 2. Starting the match that would prove to be exciting in the early rounds, we saw Red Dragon taking a solid defense against VerTu. VerTu couldn't get their B rushes to work and were forced to cough up several rounds on offense. Saving them from a mental trap, Fyter managed to pull off his now famous 1vs4 clutch against Red Dragon, which helped VerTu get back on track with their A game. With the sides switched VerTu flashed their strong defense by only dropping two rounds to Red Dragon. Warhead had gone to VerTu, and Red Dragon had to pick it up in the second map.

VerTu headed into the second map with a very strong mental game, while on the opposite end we had Red Dragon looking for any trick play to pull a win on Grey Hammer. VerTu choosing offense first showed us the confidence they had in their individual game. This wasn't to be a bad decision as VerTu took a controlling offense and won the first half of Grey Hammer 5 to 2. Red Dragon was put in a difficult position and had to win this half or lose the match and say good bye to the first place finish. VerTu being the solid and consistent team they are, blocked Red Dragon from getting a single round until they won the half and gained the title of WOGL Season 2 Champions. Red Dragon put up their best and had an amazing season but it wasn't enough for the skilled and efficient team they had to play against.

Congrats WOGL CA Season 2 Champions VerTu!

CTF Divisional Recap

Alpha: Vertu ran through alpha division undefeated with only one momentary stall provided by newcomer Burial in a close 8-5 game.

Bravo: ProCore had their first big match on a map they own in Cold Seed against cG who were handled 10-5. They proceeded to carry the momentum into knocking off future SnD 2nd place winners Red Dragon in dominating Fashion. 7-1 to finish their regular season flawlessly.

Delta: ZS Clan Shut out Syndicate X and won a surprisingly close match against an upstart DRS to exit the regular season unscathed and looking good.

CTF Playoffs Recap

Three undefeated teams headed into Playoffs all on a collision course. The two top teams from Season 1 in Vertu and ProCore were among them, but also a newcomer team ZS-Clan was lurking in the brackets. However, there was a preliminary match to be played by the two lowest seeds in the tournament. The winner would go onto play the #1 seeded team, ProCore. [#9]Omniscient snuck by [#8]DRS to a score of 6-5. At the time this match was seemingly insignificant. The Quarter-Finals began as expected; two of the three divisional champions advanced over lower seeds. Then the biggest upset in CTF history occurred. Omniscient knocks off ProCore and it was ugly! Paroxsyme was also shocked by a brand new Syndicate X team! After the mayhem ensued, one side of the bracket saw ZS Clan taking on former champs, Vertu in a "passing of the guard" of the CTF trophy per say. Shocker received POTW stepping it up against the best CTF team in the game but it was also a total team effort as it tends to be in this game type. ZS Clan moved on to the finals with a score of 13-8. The "upset" side of the bracket was a display of how Omniscient did not let up and kept rolling into a 23-16 win over Syndicate X. The #2 and #9 teams ZS Clan and Omniscient were set to clash in the Finals for the ultimate CTF bragging rights!

ZS-Clan vs. Omniscient
Two new teams who had never been there before, but have certainly earned their place...

ZS Clan, a Zil Gaming offshoot, originally were known as a mei/shotty/law/flash non-WOGL rules type clan and one leader, Elysion specifically was skeptical of WOGL rules very publicly. Another leader MoonGirl was convinced by Operations Director Sandy to participate and try the rules out in several scrims against a ProCore team. ZS-Clan grew to like it and for them to adapt from using one rule type their whole time playing Combat Arms to the success they have had with WOGL rules is an amazing feat in itself. It is a big statement about the skill level of players who use over powered items just for fun and should be an inspiration for those players to enter competitive gaming.

Omniscient's road was long and arduous, They had to play more matches than anyone in the playoffs. In the beginning of Season 2 Omniscient was a no name team, and this finals appearance put their face on the map. Hard work really does pay off and the transformation of this team tells the story. All of them deserve a great deal of respect for sticking together after several losses and improving so much as a group as well as individually.

Although Back2Flash and Scirca had great games in the CTF Championship Finals, the slaying capability of PureBeastly and Shocker in addition to the "Great Wall" of Shoemaker and Johnl (who earned co-MVP honors) were just too much for Omniscient to handle. Zs-Clan sealed it in two nail biting maps 12-10!

Congrats WOGL CA CTF Season 2 Champions ZS-Clan!

Season 2 in the Books

Proving how interesting, intense and unpredictable any competitive league can be, Combat Arms certainly proved to live up to any FPS competitive standard. Through the teams, the players, the support from the community, and the driving force of the WOGL staff, Season 2 of Combat Arms was a thirteen week run at showing how competitive Combat Arms can be. Pre-Season and onward taught all parties involved a thing or two about competitive gaming and a lot about a competitive community. Divisionals found the most deserving teams and the Playoffs found WOGL a champion for a second time.

The thirty-six teams and hundreds of players who participated have created history and pushed the competitive gaming community milestones ahead of where it was just four months ago. The success of Season 2 and WOGL for a second season have shown that WOGL is a capable business in managing and supporting the competitive elements of any FPS or game. Everyone here at WOGL hopes you've had an exciting and entertaining experience through-out Season 2, and we hope to see you back here again for Season 3 and our other upcoming leagues!

Thanks your support and participation,

- WOGL Staff

WOGL CA Season 3 will be featuring a WOGL-P and WOGL-O divisions, as well as a ton of improved content like WOGL.tv, the ScrimSpot Anti-Cheat, Nexon support, and much more. Check weekly for updates and events that will be published in the coming days, weeks and months!

It was a good Season, and I enjoyed playing with cG, Burial, and most importantly Abstract through-out this Season. Was a lot of fun.

Congrats to VerTu and ZS Clan on winning their respective leagues as well. Good job.

was fun knocking off e7 this season, not so fun losing to omniscient and especially silenced, but I guess you got to take the ups with the downs

good season to everyone involved, from the staff, to the players, to the fans... thanks for being a part of WOGL

Good season, and was fun to see how my team evolved.

I think it will probably be the most exciting one due to the fact that a lot of big names will not be playing this season and due to the number of teams that competed.

Will CA S3 be able to top it?
