I am currently majoring in Accounting at Manhattan College in NYC. I don't have a special passion for accounting or anything, its just that its very intuitive to me and provides the best job oppurtunities of any of the Business majors. I was originally put off during the engineering orientation and switched to business before my first semester.
Unfortunately the educational system is so messed up that often times students dont really know what they are interested in until it is too late. For example, in most US high schools the sciences are taught in this order: Biology, Chemistry, Physics. Immediately it is obvious that this is counterintuitive. A basic understanding of how matter interacts with and moves through space time (physics) is required to understand how chemical compounds are formed, Physics is the root of Chemistry. Chemistry is the root of Biology, and so on. When not taught in order, most often the educational process (atleast when it comes to science) shifts from one of understanding the topics to one of memorization and repetition.
I think that is why most students (and I in particular) didn't realize I was fascinated with many different sciences until it was too late to switch my major in an efficient way. If I had known what I know now when applying to College I would have most likely went into the field of astrophysics and cosmology. Unfortunately now that has been relegated to a hobby.
But hey you never know, after graduating with an Accounting degree, I might decide to take some online courses in the sciences that I am truly interested in.
