If anyone's interested, you can actually watch full IPL games on IPL's YouTube channel:
YouTube - IPL's Channel The Twenty20 format is nice because it puts cricket on par with other popular sports when comparing playing times. And then there's always the World Twenty20 championship, where Australia looks particularly unstoppable, even though I'm always behind England and The West Indies. Call me old fashioned, though, but I can't seem to get myself behind Twenty20 cricket. I'm still a fan of ODIs and test cricket. |

Well, T20 is important to cricket when it comes to the fans, no one denies that. But to be among the best cricketers in the world, you need ODI and test format matches under your belt. It's the experience that matters most.
That's why the majority of a cricketer's young career - when he's learning to play; whether it be at Eton or Harrow or the Indian/Australian amateur leagues - is spent playing test or ODI matches. You can't put up a player into the IPL who's played short format matches his entire life and expect him to hold even a near candle to players who have long format international experience. The IPL is more or less an exhibition, for the fans and for the financial health of cricket. If it becomes the primary form of cricket, you'll see the overall quality of the game drop. But, if it stays the way it is right now, the sport is stable, both financially and talent-wise. I've played cricket when I was younger, which is basically why I still prefer ODI and tests to T20. But, I agree, to the average fan, T20 is still the best way to enjoy cricket. Last edited by Dubliner; 05-07-2010 at 10:42 PM. |
